TECH TREES is a small, family owned and operated, online container tree/shrub nursery, located in Crofton, Nebraska. Presently, there is no physical store from which trees are sold locally - only the growing compound areas and greenhouses. The Hesse's have chosen to operate primarily as an online business, although trees may be picked up locally. Please refer to the ordering section for more details regarding ordering.

TECH TREES' nursery grows more than 100 native species. Seedlings may be planted anytime the soil can be worked and are available when target dimensions are met. Container production of tree and shrub seedlings is expanding because field grown seedlings must be dug in the fall, stored in refrigeration, and then sold and planted in a short period during the following spring. Digging fall seedlings results in a loss of as much as 90% of the root mass subjecting these seedlings to added stress during their first few years after outplanting. Seedlings grown properly in containers minimizes the stress of planting but not all container grown trees are equal.

TECH TREES' seedlings are grown to maximize root plug quality with fibrous root systems, which have been inoculated with mycorrhizae to give them the best chance for survival. To learn more about TECH TREES high growth rate please refer to the Q & A section or contact Larry or Margaret Hesse, owners.

CONIFERS
CONIFERS

Individual conifer species can range in height from 6 inches to more than 36 inches. As a general rule we try to ship the tallest specimens in stock, which usually means the older trees (3-4 years). If a customer would prefer smaller trees send us an e-mail after you place your order and we will send younger, smaller trees. The height is not all that important in these young conifers, because they have strong root systems at all ages and sizes. Maximum growth capacity will occur after young trees are established in their planting location which can take as long as 3-5 years. Even then the amount of growth each year will depend on your soil, the availability of suitable moisture and nutrients, and the amount of stress associated with pests, diseases, climatic extremes, and competition from weeds.

Deciduous tree growth in our nursery varies greatly within individual species. They were grown for two years in our greenhouse, packed tightly together. Shading, and competition for water and fertilizer produces faster growing individuals among a group of the same trees. As a result, some have limited top growth. Height may range from 12 inches to more than 48 inches in the same species and same age group. Deciduous trees older than 2 years can approach 72 inches in height.

We have not found a suitable method to ship trees taller than 48 inches. Boxes longer than 48 inches become too costly and the heavy paper bags we have tried hold fewer trees and trees in these bags tend to be damaged more often during shipping. We will try to fill all deciduous tree orders with specimens that are at or under 48 inches in height, unless smaller trees are specifically requested.

If a customer would prefer to have a taller tree with a somewhat heavier stem caliper we will remove some of the top of the tree so it can be shipped in a 48 inch box. In most cases topping at this early age will have little or no effect on the ultimate shape and growth but some species respond less favorably to topping. We encourage customers to investigate the species they would like to purchase to determine if topping is an OK option should you choose to order large specimens. You may request smaller or larger individuals and we will do our best to satisfy your request. If 48 inch or smaller specimens are unavailable for a particular species at the time you order, we will let you know and you can decide if you want us to top some bigger trees to fill your order or we will gladly refund you money and will let you know when smaller specimens are available.
