Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa): It is widely distributed throughout eastern U.S. and the Great Plains states, north into Canada. It is very drought tolerant and very cold hardy. This oak is relatively slow growing but landscape trees grow nearly 2 feet per year. It can reach more than 170 feet in height and may live more than 300 years. It has a rapidly developing taproot and lateral system that can weigh as much as the shoot weight. It is intermediate in shade tolerance. Its acorns are very valuable as wildlife forage (U.S. Forest Service Silvics Manual).
