Northern Pin Oak (Quercus ellipsoidalis): The natural range is mostly the middle and western Great lakes states. It is a small to medium sized tree reaching to about 70 feet. It has a deep taproot and wide-spreading laterals. It is very drought tolerant occurring on dry, acid, sandy soils. It is very intolerant of shade, quite cold hardy, and useful for rehabilitating disturbed sites. Its wood is valuable like other red oaks and its acorns are important food for many wildlife (U.S. Forest Service Silvics Manual). |
